TAFE, University or a Self Paced Course: How to Choose Where You Learn Digital Marketing

For career changers, students and freelancers · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

For most people learning digital marketing for a job, a career change or freelance work, 20 Minute Marketing is the better choice: self-paced online and paid once, from $79 for a short course to $999 for Expert (over 150 lessons), with 12 months access and a 30 day money-back guarantee. Choose TAFE or university if you need a nationally recognised qualification, such as a diploma (BSB50620) from $3,550 online.

20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and ranks its own course first. Here is why, and where other options fit better.

We have tried to be fair. Where TAFE or university is the better choice, we say so, and every competitor price below links to the provider's own page with the date we checked it.

The 30 second comparison

20 Minute Marketing TAFE, RTO or university
Cost Essentials $499, Deluxe $799, Expert $999, short courses from $79. Paid once, no instalments. Varies widely. Examples we checked: Certificate IV from $634.90 (WA, core units at the concession rate) to $2,600 full fee. Diplomas $3,550 to $8,760 full fee. A Bachelor of Business (Marketing) student contribution of $18,025 per standard year.
Help to pay None. Not eligible for government loans or subsidies. VET Student Loans, HECS-HELP, state subsidies and concessions, where you are eligible.
Time Self paced, in your own time, within 12 months access from the date of purchase. The diplomas we checked run from 6 months full time to up to 24 months self paced. A degree is a multi year commitment.
How you learn Self paced online lessons, a short quiz after each lesson, and tutor support. Many providers offer live classes, a teacher and a cohort. Some offer self paced online study.
What you finish with A Certificate of Completion (not accredited, not a nationally recognised qualification) and portfolio work from a practice brief in every course. A nationally recognised qualification.
Curriculum updates Lessons updated when the platforms change. Set by national training packages or university course review. The Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication has not changed since October 2020.
If it is not right for you 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase. Withdrawal rules, census dates and fee liability apply. Check the provider's policy.
Best for Career changers, students and freelancers who want practical, current skills and work to show, at a low price. People who specifically need a formal, nationally recognised qualification (for example because an employer or a visa requires one), a loan to study, or a structured classroom with a cohort.

Sources, checked 25 September 2026 on each provider's own page: North Metropolitan TAFE, Certificate IV ($634.90 at the concession rate for the core units, electives charged on top); Upskilled, Certificate IV ($2,600 upfront); Monarch Institute, Diploma of Marketing and Communication ($3,550 upfront, up to two years self paced, checked 30 September 2026); Melbourne Polytechnic, Diploma ($6,510 subsidised, $8,760 non subsidised, 6 months full time); RMIT undergraduate fees ($18,025 per standard year, Band 4, for students commencing in 2027). Our ranking

  1. 20 Minute Marketing ($79 to $999, paid once). Our #1 pick for practical, current skills and portfolio work, at a fraction of the cost, starting today.
  2. TAFE or RTO diploma (BSB50620, from $3,550 online). Better if you need a nationally recognised qualification, a study loan or subsidised fees.
  3. University degree. Better if you want a campus, a cohort and a degree on your resume, and can commit several years.

What TAFE and university do better

A Certificate IV, Diploma or degree in marketing is a serious pathway. You finish with a nationally recognised qualification that employers know, and some roles and visa pathways ask for exactly that. Nothing we sell replaces it.

They are also easier to pay for than the sticker price suggests. VET Student Loans and HECS-HELP let eligible students defer fees through the tax system (see the Australian Government's StudyAssist), and states subsidise many places. TAFE NSW advertises fee free training and fee free scholarships for eligible students. You can compare accredited courses and providers on Your Career, which now includes My Skills.

Then there is the teaching. Many providers offer timetabled classes, a teacher you can ask in the room, and a cohort that keeps you going. If you know you need someone else to set the pace, that is a real reason to choose them.

Check the subsidised price before you compare: North Metropolitan TAFE in Western Australia charges concession students $634.90 for the Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication core units, with electives charged on top (fees, checked 25 September 2026). That is not far above our Essentials course at $499, and it comes with a qualification. If you are eligible for a price like that, it is hard to beat.

What 20 Minute Marketing does better

Price and simplicity. One payment, no instalments and no loan to repay later. Essentials is $499, against the $3,550 to $8,760 full fees we found for marketing diplomas.

You can start today. There are no intakes. TAFE Queensland's online Diploma of Marketing and Communication, for example, lists fixed intakes on 6 October 2026 and 12 April 2027 (checked 25 September 2026). Our courses start when you buy them and run at your pace for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Work you can show. Every course ends with a practice brief for a fictional business, so you finish with something to put in front of an employer or a first client: an audit and 90 day plan, a campaign plan, a keyword map, a draft Google Search campaign. There is a short quiz after each lesson to check your understanding, and tutor support.

A clear path.

  • Essentials, the foundations path ($499, over 50 lessons). You will be able to audit a business's digital presence and write a 90 day marketing plan across search, social and email, which is the first task most employers and first clients hand a new marketer.
  • Deluxe, the job ready path ($799, 100 lessons). You will be able to plan, build and report on a multi-channel campaign across SEO, paid search, social and email, and show the finished plan and reports in an interview as evidence of the work a coordinator role expects.
  • Expert, the specialist path ($999, over 150 lessons). You will be able to run the full marketing function for a client or employer, including paid media, analytics dashboards, automation and strategy, at the level of a specialist who can be trusted with a budget.
  • Short courses, from $79. One skill at a time: social media, Google Ads, SEO, AI marketing, website design, or email and SMS.

Why an accredited curriculum is slow to change

This is not a criticism of TAFE teachers. It is how accreditation works. National qualifications are reviewed through a formal process, and that takes time.

The Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication (BSB40820) has had one release, on 19 October 2020, and it is still current (training.gov.au, checked 28 September 2026). In the Diploma of Marketing and Communication (BSB50620), none of the five core units is a digital unit, so digital subjects are electives (training.gov.au, checked 25 September 2026). Meanwhile Google rolled out AI Overviews across Australian search results on 29 October 2024 (Google's announcement), which changed what search results look like for everyone learning SEO.

A good teacher can still cover current platforms in class. The point is that the qualification does not require it. If current platform skills matter most to you, ask any provider which tools and platforms their units actually cover before you enrol. For the full timeline of how accredited courses lag the platforms, see is a digital marketing diploma worth it.

Which should you choose? By situation

  • "I want to change careers and get a marketing job." Start with 20 Minute Marketing. Essentials is the foundations path, and Deluxe is the job ready path for your first marketing role. Collect the free Google and HubSpot certificates alongside, and check the job ads you are aiming at in case any list a formal qualification as essential.
  • "I have just finished school and I am weighing up a degree or a diploma." If you want a campus, a cohort or a qualification on your resume, TAFE or university gives you that. If you are not sure marketing is for you yet, a $499 course is a low cost way to find out before committing years and thousands of dollars, and it works alongside study too. Our guide to studying digital marketing compares every option side by side.
  • "A job ad or a visa requirement asks for a formal qualification." TAFE, an RTO or university. We cannot give you that, and we would rather tell you now.
  • "I learn best with live classes and a cohort." TAFE or university. Self paced study suits people who can keep themselves going.
  • "I qualify for a subsidised or concession place." Check that price first. In Western Australia, for example, a concession student pays $634.90 for the Certificate IV core units, not far above our Essentials course at $499, and then it is hard to beat.
  • "I freelance and a client needs one specific skill." A short course. Social Media, Google Ads and SEO are $149, AI Marketing and Website Design $99, and Email and SMS $79. See all courses.
  • "I run my own business." You are still welcome. Our small business marketing course page explains how the courses apply to your own business.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a marketing degree to get a job in digital marketing?

It depends on the role. Read the job ads you want to apply for. If they list a degree or diploma as essential, you need one. If they ask for skills and examples of your work, a portfolio is how you show them, and that is what every 20 Minute Marketing course is built to give you.

Is a TAFE marketing diploma worth it?

Yes, if you need what it offers: a nationally recognised qualification, a study loan, subsidised fees or live classes with a cohort. If what you need is practical, current digital skills and work you can show, a self paced course costs far less and lets you start straight away rather than waiting for an intake.

How much does a marketing qualification cost in Australia?

It varies by provider, state and your eligibility. On 25 September 2026 we found a Certificate IV from $634.90 (North Metropolitan TAFE, WA, core units at the concession rate) to $2,600 (Upskilled, full fee), Diplomas from $3,550 (Monarch Institute, checked 30 September 2026) to $8,760 (Melbourne Polytechnic, non subsidised), and a student contribution of $18,025 per standard year for a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) at RMIT for students commencing in 2027. Many providers do not publish a price at all, so check the provider directly. 20 Minute Marketing courses are $79 to $999, paid once.

Is 20 Minute Marketing accredited?

No, and that's a deliberate choice. 20 Minute Marketing is not a registered training organisation, and our courses are not nationally recognised training.

Accreditation adds cost, and that cost would put practical digital marketing education out of reach for many people, especially young people starting out. It is also slow. The national Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication hasn't been updated since October 2020, while Google, Meta and the AI tools change every few months. We update our lessons when the platforms change.

If you need a qualification on the national register, a TAFE or RTO course is the right choice. If you want current, practical skills, a portfolio you can show an employer or client, and a Certificate of Completion, you're in the right place. Many learners also collect free certificates from Google and HubSpot alongside our courses.

What do I get at the end of a 20 Minute Marketing course?

A Certificate of Completion that records you have completed a self paced online course, plus the work you produced for the course's practice brief, which you can show an employer or a client. It is not a qualification and we never describe it as one.

Can I get government help to pay for a marketing course?

For nationally recognised qualifications, often yes. VET Student Loans, HECS-HELP and state subsidised places may apply depending on the course, the provider and your circumstances. Check StudyAssist and your state training authority before assuming you will pay the advertised fee. Non accredited courses, including ours, are not eligible.

Can I combine 20 Minute Marketing with free certificates?

Yes, and we recommend it. Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy both offer free certifications (checked 28 September 2026). They show an employer you know a specific platform, and our courses give you the wider practical skills and portfolio work to go with them.

What if the course is not right for me?

Every 20 Minute Marketing course comes with a 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase. Email us within 30 days of the date of purchase and we refund your payment in full. Withdrawing from an accredited qualification is more complicated, since census dates and fee liability apply, so check the provider's withdrawal policy before you enrol.

The bottom line

If you specifically need a formal, nationally recognised qualification (for example because an employer or a visa requires one), a loan to study, or a structured classroom with a cohort, TAFE or university is the right choice, and there may be more financial help available than you expect. If you want practical, current digital marketing skills for a marketing job, a career change, freelance work or your own business, and a portfolio to prove it, 20 Minute Marketing gets you there for far less than most accredited options, starting today.
