Quick answer: The best short course depends on your goal. HubSpot Academy is free. Monarch Institute's SEO course is $645 with a Digital Marketing Institute certificate. RMIT Online's Digital Marketing Strategy is $1,900 over 6 weeks. 20 Minute Marketing short courses are $79 to $149, paid once. Prices checked 3 October 2026.
20 Minute Marketing publishes this guide and sells short courses. We have tried to say plainly where other options are the better choice.
This guide is for people learning digital marketing to get paid for it: career changers, students weighing up their options, people upskilling in their current job, and freelancers adding a skill clients will pay for. It covers what a short course is, what the main Australian options cost, what each one does well, and how to choose. For the wider picture, including diplomas and longer programmes, see our complete digital marketing courses comparison.
What counts as a short course (and who it suits)
A short course is focused training you can finish in hours or weeks rather than a year or more. It usually covers one skill, such as SEO or Google Ads, or one tight area, such as marketing strategy. It does not lead to a nationally recognised qualification.
Short courses suit you if you want to test whether digital marketing is for you before committing to a diploma, if you need one specific skill for a role you are applying for, or if a client has asked for something you have not done before. If you need a recognised qualification for an employer, a TAFE or RTO course is the right path. Our guide to studying digital marketing in Australia covers those options.

Each option, honestly
HubSpot Academy (free)
The obvious first step. It costs nothing and gives you a brand-name certification. The trade-off is that it is a software vendor's own curriculum, so expect it to lean on that vendor's tools. Treat it as a credential to collect alongside whatever else you study, not instead of it.
Monarch Institute SEO short course ($645)
An 11 hour, self paced, non-accredited course. Its advantage is the Digital Marketing Institute certificate that comes with it, which some learners value on a CV. It covers one skill, SEO, so it is a single-topic buy like the other short courses here.
RMIT Online Digital Marketing Strategy ($1,900)
Six weeks at 8 to 10 hours per week, online, with set start dates. You get a university name and a timetable that keeps you moving, which suits people who struggle to finish self paced study. It asks for more time each week and has fixed intakes, so check it fits your schedule.
AIM Mini MBA in Digital Marketing ($4,750)
25 hours of self paced study plus a 2 day on-campus or virtual workshop, pitched at an advanced level. The live workshop is something none of the cheaper options here offer. Because it is pitched at an advanced level, it is usually not where a beginner should start.
20 Minute Marketing short courses ($79 to $149)
Six courses, one skill each, in lessons of about 20 minutes. You pay once and keep access for 12 months, with tutor support from the founder, Adrian Prokopiec, who runs digital marketing for two national brands. You get a Certificate of Completion, which is not accredited. The six courses are:
- Social media marketing: 30+ lessons, $149
- Google Ads: 13 lessons, $149
- SEO: 32 lessons, $149
- AI marketing: 19+ lessons, $99
- Website design: 13 lessons, $99
- Email and SMS marketing: 18 lessons, $79
What it does not offer: a university brand, a live workshop, a third-party certificate or any recognised qualification. You can compare all six on our digital marketing short courses page.
How to choose a short course: a 6 point checklist
- Your goal: a first job, a promotion, or a skill to sell to clients? Pick the course that produces something you can show for that goal.
- Time per week: be honest about the hours you have. A course you finish beats a better course you abandon.
- Practical work: look for tasks you complete, not only videos you watch. Work you can put in a portfolio is what helps in an interview.
- Australian context: local platforms, local search behaviour and Australian rules such as the Spam Act.
- Recency: platforms change quickly. Check when the course was last updated.
- What the certificate is: a completion certificate, a vendor certification and a recognised qualification are three different things. Know which one you are buying.
Which option fits where you are starting from
Complete beginner or career changer. Start free with HubSpot Academy to see whether you enjoy the work. Then pick one skill and learn it properly, ideally through a course that has you build something you can show. Our career change into digital marketing guide walks through the path.
Student choosing what to study. A short course is a cheap way to test the field before committing to a degree or diploma. If you need a recognised qualification, go to TAFE or an RTO.
Upskilling in your current job. Pick the channel your role is moving towards. If your employer is paying and values a university name, RMIT Online is a strong option. For an advanced strategic programme with live time, AIM is built for that.
Freelancer adding a service. Choose the single skill a client is asking for and learn it fast. Our short digital marketing courses are built for exactly that: one skill per course, paid once.
Certificates and accreditation: what they mean
None of the short courses in the table is a nationally recognised qualification. A vendor certification, such as HubSpot's, shows you know that vendor's material. A third-party certificate, such as the Digital Marketing Institute certificate that comes with Monarch's SEO course, is another credential to list. A Certificate of Completion, such as 20 Minute Marketing's, shows you finished the course. In interviews, what usually carries the most weight is work you can show and explain. If a job ad or employer asks for a recognised qualification, choose a TAFE or RTO course. For why accredited courses update more slowly than the platforms they teach, see is a digital marketing diploma worth it.
