Digital Marketing Skills Employers Want in 2026: Training Your Team or Yourself
Oct 04, 2026
Employers want the skills in their own ads and role descriptions, which usually come back to writing, campaign planning, running one channel well and reading analytics. To upskill yourself or a team, list the tasks the role now includes, match each to a short course, and check the work on a practice brief before live accounts.
This guide is for people whose job now includes marketing, and for managers training staff. It avoids made up rankings of the most wanted skills: we do not know of a public Australian dataset that ranks them, so we show you how to build the list from your own roles instead. For the training options themselves, see our upskilling pathway.
Where the skill list should come from
Start with official descriptions, then get specific. Jobs and Skills Australia describes marketing specialists as people who research demand and market characteristics, collect and analyse data, and advise on product mix, pricing, advertising and sales promotion (Jobs and Skills Australia, checked 30 September 2026). That is the broad shape. The detail comes from three places you can check yourself:
- The role description. For your own job or your team's, list every marketing task the role now includes, even the small ones.
- Current job ads for similar roles. Collect five or six. Note the tools named and the verbs used: plan, write, report, manage.
- The results you are asked for. If your manager asks for more enquiries from the website, the skills behind that are search, conversion and analytics.
The core skill map
Most marketing roles draw on the skills below. Use the table as a checklist against your own list, not as a ranking.
| Skill | What it looks like at work | Short course that teaches it |
|---|---|---|
| Search engine optimisation | Keyword research, updating pages, fixing technical issues, reporting on rankings | Search Engine Optimisation, 32 lessons, $149 |
| Paid search | Building and adjusting Google Ads campaigns within a budget | Google Ads: PPC Powerhouse, 13 lessons, $149 |
| Social media | A content calendar, posts, community replies and a monthly report | Social Media Marketing, 34 lessons, $149 |
| AI tools | Using AI to research, draft and produce content, and checking it before it goes out | AI Marketing: Prompt to Profit, 19 lessons, $99 |
| Websites and conversion | Planning and improving pages so visitors take the next step | Website Design: Website Wins, 13 lessons, $99 |
| Email and SMS | Newsletters, automated sequences, consent and Spam Act compliance | Email and SMS: Inbox to Income, 18 lessons, $79 |
| All of the above, as a foundation | Understanding how the channels fit together | Essentials, over 50 lessons, $499 |
All prices paid once, with 12 months access from the date of purchase. Lessons are about 20 minutes each.
Training yourself
- Choose one skill. The one your job needs this quarter, not the one that sounds most impressive.
- Set a small, regular slot. Three lessons of about 20 minutes a week gets you through a 13 to 34 lesson short course in one to three months.
- Finish the practice piece before touching live accounts. Every one of our courses ends with a practice brief on a fictional business, so you make your first mistakes where they cost nothing.
- Add the free certificates. Google says its foundational Skillshop certifications are free (Google Skillshop Help) and HubSpot Academy's certifications are free (HubSpot Academy), both checked 28 September 2026.
- Show your manager the work. A finished audit or draft campaign makes a clearer case for more responsibility than a certificate alone.
Training a team
- Map tasks to people. List the marketing tasks the team now covers and who does each one.
- Match each gap to one course. Train for the task in front of each person, one course per person.
- Use the practice brief as the check. Review each person's finished brief with them before they run live campaigns.
- Protect the time. Short lessons only work if the time is actually free. Put it in the calendar.
- Decide where a qualification matters. If a role or promotion requires a recognised qualification, a TAFE or RTO course is the right choice for that person.
How to tell the training is working
Certificates show that someone finished a course. The better signal is the work. After each course, ask three questions: can the person explain what they did in the practice brief and why, can they do the same task on a live account with less help than before, and has the result the role is measured on moved in the right direction after a few months? If the answer to the first two is yes, the training has done its job, even if the third takes longer, because results also depend on budget, season and the product being marketed.
Keep the finished practice pieces. They are a useful record for performance reviews and a starting point when the next person joins the team.

Frequently asked questions
What digital marketing skills do employers want?
The skills in the job ads for the roles you care about. In our experience, most roles come back to the same core: clear writing, planning a campaign, running at least one channel well, and reading results in analytics. We do not know of a public Australian dataset that ranks these skills, so use the ads as your list.
How do I upskill in digital marketing while working?
Pick the one skill your job needs next, learn it in short sessions, and finish a practice piece of work before using it on real accounts. Lessons of about 20 minutes fit into a lunch break. Add the free Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy certifications as you go.
How much does digital marketing training for staff cost?
It ranges from free platform certificates to several thousand dollars. A self paced SEO short course at Monarch Institute is $645, RMIT Future Skills' Digital Marketing Strategy is $1,900 and AIM's Mini MBA in Digital Marketing is $4,750 (each checked on the provider's page, see sources). Our short courses cost $79 to $149 each, paid once.
Can an employer pay for a 20 Minute Marketing course?
Yes. Each course is a single payment for one learner, so an employer can pay for it like any other training. For several staff, email members@20minutemarketing.com.au.
Is 20 Minute Marketing accredited?
No. Our courses are not accredited and are not nationally recognised training. You receive a Certificate of Completion, which records that you completed a self paced online course. If a role lists a formal qualification as essential, a TAFE or RTO course is the right choice. Many learners collect free certificates from Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy alongside our courses.
