How to Become a Digital Marketer in Australia (No Degree Needed)
Sep 30, 2026
You can become a digital marketer in Australia without a degree. Learn the foundations across search, social, email and paid ads, go deep on one channel, build portfolio pieces on practice briefs, collect free platform certificates, then apply for entry roles. About half of marketing specialists hold a degree, so check what each job ad asks for.
This guide is for people changing careers or starting out who want a realistic route in. It uses public data where it exists and says so where it does not. 20 Minute Marketing sells self paced courses, so weigh our view with that in mind. If you are still deciding whether to change careers at all, start with our career change pathway.
Do you need a degree to work in digital marketing?
No rule requires one, but plenty of people in the field have one. Jobs and Skills Australia's profile of Marketing Specialists, drawn from the ABS 2021 Census, shows the highest qualification held by the 71,700 people working in that occupation (Jobs and Skills Australia, checked 30 September 2026):
| Highest qualification | Share of marketing specialists |
|---|---|
| Bachelor degree | 51.9% |
| Postgraduate degree or graduate diploma | 18.6% |
| Advanced diploma or diploma | 9.8% |
| Certificate III or IV | 4.8% |
| Year 12 | 10.0% |
Source: Jobs and Skills Australia, Marketing Specialists (ANZSCO 225113), ABS 2021 Census, checked 30 September 2026. Rows do not add to 100% because smaller categories are not shown.
Read that table honestly. A degree is the most common path, and some employers will list one as essential. But about one in four people in the occupation (24.6% in total) had a diploma, a Certificate III or IV, or Year 12 as their highest qualification, which tells you the door is not closed. The job ads for the roles you want are the real test: if a qualification is listed as essential, you need one. If the ad asks for skills and examples of work, a portfolio is how you answer it.
The five steps
- Learn how the channels fit together. Search, social media, email, paid ads, websites and analytics are connected. An employer expects you to understand how a campaign moves someone from seeing an ad to making an enquiry, even if you only run one part of it.
- Go deep on one channel. Pick the one you enjoy most, such as SEO, social media, paid search or email. Depth in one area gives you something specific to talk about in an interview.
- Build work you can show. You do not need a job or a business to produce real work. A practice brief on a fictional business lets you produce an audit, a campaign plan or a draft Google Search campaign. Label it as practice work, never as work for a real client.
- Collect the free platform certificates. Google says its foundational Skillshop certifications are free (Google Skillshop Help), and HubSpot Academy's certifications are free (HubSpot Academy), both checked 28 September 2026. Google Ads certifications are valid for one year (Google Ads Help), so plan to renew.
- Apply, and keep building. Apply for entry roles with your portfolio link in the application. Keep adding small pieces of work while you apply. Our guide to digital marketing jobs with no experience covers which roles to target.
The ways to learn it, compared
Every route below can get you there. They differ on price, time, structure and whether you end with a recognised qualification. Prices are from each provider's own page on the date shown in the sources.
| Route | Example price | Recognised qualification | What it does well |
|---|---|---|---|
| TAFE or RTO certificate or diploma | $634.90 (North Metropolitan TAFE, WA, Certificate IV core units at the concession rate) [2]; $5,535 (TAFE Queensland diploma) [3] | Yes | A qualification on the national register, teachers and timetables, and loans or subsidies for eligible students |
| Accredited online diploma | $3,550 (Monarch Institute, Diploma of Marketing and Communication) [4] | Yes | A recognised marketing qualification you study online at your own pace |
| Bootcamp or short course | $899 (Academy Xi, Foundations, self paced) [5] to $8,999 (Academy Xi, Advanced Certificate) [6] | No | Structure, and at the higher end live teaching and career support |
| Free platform certificates | Free (Google Skillshop foundational [7], HubSpot Academy [8]) | No | Free, and a brand name an employer recognises |
| 20 Minute Marketing | $79 to $149 per short course; Essentials $499, paid once | No. Certificate of Completion | Low cost, self paced, lessons of about 20 minutes, a portfolio brief in every course |
Prices and inclusions differ between providers, so check each provider's page before you decide.

How long it takes
Most people can learn the foundations in a few months part time. Our Essentials course has over 50 lessons of about 20 minutes each, about 18 hours in total. At three lessons a week that is about four months, plus the time you spend on the portfolio brief. You have 12 months access from the date of purchase, so a busy month does not cost you the course.
The job search is separate, and nobody can honestly promise how long it will take. It depends on the roles you target, where you live and what you can show.
If you are weighing up the move on money, our guide to digital marketing salary for beginners sets out what entry roles pay in Australia, using SEEK's latest national averages.
What a course can and cannot do for you
What you can control is the evidence. A finished audit, a campaign plan or a draft ad campaign that you can walk an interviewer through is often more useful than a line on a resume. Our lessons are written by Adrian Prokopiec, who runs digital marketing for two national brands, and every course ends with a practice brief so you finish with that kind of evidence.
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a digital marketer without a degree?
Yes. No law or licence requires a degree for digital marketing work in Australia. Degrees are common, though: in the 2021 Census, 51.9% of Australia's marketing specialists held a bachelor degree and 10.0% had Year 12 as their highest qualification (Jobs and Skills Australia). Whether you need one depends on the roles you apply for, so read the ads.
How long does it take to become a digital marketer?
Learning the foundations takes a few months part time. Our Essentials course has over 50 lessons of about 20 minutes, about 18 hours in total, which is about four months at three lessons a week. Add time for a portfolio piece and for job applications. No honest provider can tell you how long the job search will take.
What should I learn first?
Learn how the main channels fit together first: search, social, email, paid ads and analytics. Then go deep on one channel you enjoy, such as SEO or social media, so you have one skill you can show in detail.
Is a free Google certificate enough?
On its own it shows you know Google's tools, which is useful, and Google says its foundational Skillshop certifications are free (Google Skillshop Help). Most people also need work they can show. Collect the certificate and build a portfolio piece alongside it.
Is 20 Minute Marketing accredited?
No. Our courses are not accredited and are not nationally recognised training. You receive a Certificate of Completion, which records that you completed a self paced online course. If a role lists a formal qualification as essential, a TAFE or RTO course is the right choice. Many learners collect free certificates from Google Skillshop and HubSpot Academy alongside our courses.
Start where you are
Essentials is $499, paid once, with over 50 lessons of about 20 minutes, a portfolio brief, expert tutor support from the founder and 12 months access. 30 day money-back guarantee from the date of purchase.
